A Life Uncluttered: Crafts, Calm, and Clarity

Do you remember those early days of Covid? If you're like me, we try to forget. During that time of solitude, I discovered my talent for art and crafting. Who knew I had artistic skills? Before kids, I always enjoyed cross-stitching, a little sewing, and other things that came with instructions. But to try painting? I don't even know why or how that came to be. I just remember being in a Dollar General, probably picking up toilet paper and cleaning supplies that were running low and coming across the small crafting section. There, for under $10, I picked up a few small canvases, a small kit with acrylic paints, and some brushes. And that is how it all began. Of course, I also took a great interest in watching Bob Ross. What a fantastic teacher he was! So, that began my artistic journey.

Next came my first grandbaby, and my sweet daughter-in-law putting her trust in me to fully design and craft the items for the baby's nursery. Again, I had no idea what my capabilities were. I dug out my old sewing machine from the basement, relearned how to thread the machine, and got busy! The end result, a unique, one-of-a-kind nursery! I kind of surprised myself! I designed and created everything from the blankets, to the window valance, throw pillows, and the paintings for the wall. But my favorite accomplishment was the sweet little mobile with hand-sewn sea turtles that would swim above my first grandbaby (and now my second one) as they floated off to sleep.

The reason I'm telling you all of this is because you never know what you can accomplish until you try. Since then, I have expanded my crafting experience in so many directions. I've now engaged my daughter and daughter-in-law in my crafting craze! This not only gives us something to enjoy together as a family, but also gave us an outlet. An outlet from life's hustle and bustle. A way to unwind. Stress relief. Crafting of any kind can take you into a whole new world and allows you to leave behind reality, if only for a short while.
